Biotechniques 2013   This is the fifth International Conference on Biotechniques for Air Pollution Control and Bioenergy and the first one to be held in France in the city of Nîmes (South of France). The conference is celebrated bi-annually. La Coruña, Spain, hosted three previous exhibitions (2005, 2007 and 2011) and another one (2009) was held in Delft, The Netherlands.

   As highlighted during the past exhibitions, bioprocesses and biotechniques in general provide an expanding variety of opportunities for economical and environmentally friendly solutions for many waste gas emissions including odorous emissions, greenhouse gases (GHGs) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) containing gases. The Biotechniques-conference has become a popular event bringing together researchers and process engineers involved in air pollution prevention and control. Biotechniques available nowadays represent established technologies, although several aspects are still in the opment stage with research on, for instance, the use of new media and design, the understanding of microbial mechanisms occurring within a bioreactor, the assessment of the robustness of bioreactors during long-term operation, the opment of hybrid systems (bioreactor/bioreactor, physical-chemical techniques/biotechniques), process scale-up, or full-scale applications.


   With respect to the energy sector, new alternatives to fossil fuels are being oped, in response to the dual drivers of climate change and energy security. An interesting recent approach consists in the development of sustainable gas treatment concepts through the conversion of waste gas emissions into cleaner (bio) fuels which can thus be obtained from more economical sources than fossil fuels. Some examples were presented during the last conference and advances in this innovative approach will most certainly be addressed during this 2013-conference.


   The 5th International Conference on Biotechniques for Air pollution Control and Bioenergy (Nîmes, France) will then provide a good opportunity for a diverse community of specialized researchers, PhD students and professionals, from municipal, consulting, waste management sectors, odor abatement manufacturers, and other industrial and agricultural sectors, to share information on recent advances in the use of bioprocesses and bioenergy for solving air pollution problems.

Air pollution modelling 2013Air Pollution 2013 is the 21st Annual Meeting in the successful series of international conferences organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology dealing with Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Air Pollution.

 This important conference brings together contributions from scientists from around the world to present recent work on various aspects of the air pollution phenomena. Notable in each of the conferences in this series has been the opportunity to foster scientific exchange between participants. New collaborations amongst scientists and between scientists and policy makers or regulators have arisen through contacts made in this series, and each meeting has provided a further opportunity for identifying new areas of air pollution science demanding collaborative investigation.

  This is the first IWA Odours and Air Emissions Conference and joint Biofiltration Conference to be held in the United States in this series. Events have previously been held in London, Sydney, Singapore, Barcelona, and Vitoria, Brazil. The Biofiltration conference has been held successfully 9 times over the past 17 years in various global locations. Duke University – Pratt School of Engineering and Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana, Mexico hosted the 2010 Biofiltration Conference.

  This jointly held IWA and Biofiltration conference is a forum for the management of environmental odours, air emissions, Volatile Organic Compounds, and Greenhouse Gases. It will bring together specialist researchers and professionals from a range of sectors, including municipals, consulting, government and non-government agencies, universities, waste management, composters, odour abatement equipment manufacturers, and other industrial and agricultural sectors.

  The conference will provide attendees to meet and exchange strategies, planning approaches, operational experiences, advances, innovations, initiatives and results. Expertise in odours, air emissions, sampling, measurement, odour control operations/maintenance, and biofiltration can be exchanged, shared, and developed into innovations and new applications that complement both focus areas.

  •     Odour and air emissions formation and emission sampling techniques for point, area, combustion, and volume sources
  •     Odour and air emissions estimation methods, models, and emissions factors and dispersion modelling
  •     VOCs, GHGs, air toxics, and odorant measurements – chemical sensors, chromatography and other innovative methods
