Today, the over 50 volunteers that are working on the first International Handbook on the Assessment of Odour Exposure by using Dispersion Modelling reached their first milestone. The first draft of this handbook, was just released (only available for the volunteers) and it has, at this stage, 289 pages of information on the topic.
The group has had already 20 monthly meetings since the very first meeting took place the 27th of August 2020. This development is being led by Ms. Jennifer Barclay, principal scientist of Atmospheric Science Global (ASG) in New Zealand and Dr. Günther Schauberger, professor of the University of Veterinary Medicine of Vienna, Austria.
This document has been prepared by a group of experts under the umbrella of the website olores.org and the International Environmental Society of Odour Managers (AMIGO, for its acronym in Spanish). The handbook has the status of an international document. That means that the authors have tried to include as many international references as possible, while striving to make a homogeneous manual.
A principal aim of this handbook on odour dispersion modelling is to provide some guidance on this complex topic in a way that will be of benefit to countries with advanced odour regulations and to those countries that are looking to create regulations surrounding odour management.
The handbook is a collaborative work by more than 50 international odour experts from nineteen countries including; Australia, Belgium, Italy, France, Austria, Spain, United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, United States of America, Qatar, Australia, China, and New Zealand.
Experts within this group have met online once per month in 2020, 2021 and 2022 to discuss different issues related to this work. Seven special Task Groups (TGs), have been created that also meet regularly. Each TG has 1 or 2 TG leaders that coordinate the work of the volunteers.
The TGs and TG leaders are the following:
- TG1 - Definitions (Imelda Shanahan)
- TG2 - Meteorology (Christelle Scoffier/Jennifer Barclay)
- TG3 - Emissions and Source characterization (Anne Claude Romain/Andrew Bach)
- TG4 - Dispersion Algorithms (Gianni Tinarelli/Giuseppe Brusasca)
- TG5 - Output dose-response (Rodrigo Rosales)
- TG6 - Reporting (Tiziano Zarra/Giusi Oliva)
- TG7 - Other approaches (Carlos Nietzsche Diaz)
The aim of the group is to get the document ready by the end of this year.
