It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Domenico Cipriano, convenor of CEN/TC 264/WG 41 (“Emissions and ambient air – Instrumental odour monitoring”) and also of WG 45, within the European Committee for Standardization (CEN).
Domenico was a senior researcher at RSE SpA (Ricerca sul Sistema Energetico) in Italy, where he led the research group on “Monitoraggio Agenti Chimici e Fisici” (Monitoring of Chemical and Physical Agents). An engineer by training (nuclear engineering, Politecnico di Milano), he devoted his career to air quality and emissions monitoring, combining rigorous science with a strong commitment to standardisation and practical implementation.
At European level, Domenico served as convenor of WG 41 and WG 45 under CEN/TC 264, playing a key role in shaping standards and guidance on instrumental odour monitoring and related measurements. He was widely recognised for his professionalism, availability and collaborative spirit, becoming a trusted reference point for colleagues across the technical and scientific community.
His contributions extended beyond standardisation: he coordinated national activities on emissions and air quality (UNI GL4), participated in international initiatives such as IEA Bioenergy Task 36, and authored numerous technical publications and guidelines used by regulators and practitioners.
On behalf of the odour community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Domenico’s family, friends and colleagues. We are grateful for his dedication and the lasting legacy he leaves in the fields of air quality, emissions monitoring and odour assessment.
